brennan, the headline of "the national journal" says john brennan shows hagel how it's done. we had another drone attack today. seven people killed in pakistan. an area outside of pakistan. none are civilians according to u.s. officials. nevertheless, the dynamic there, the clearing of the chamber and some of the tough questions from democrats to brennan, how do you measure his performance yesterday and the answers he gave? >> you know, i think a frustration was built around mostly the cia and the really hostile relationship between congress and the agency over the years and what lawmakers feel is the agency's failure to brief them adequately on a lot of secret operation that is are happening overseas. i think brennan is generally safe. he did perform satisfactory according to a lot of these -- the key democrats an some of the republicans on the panel and will get confirmed. i think that will happen in the next couple of weeks but look for the issue of the drone strikes and whether or not there needs to be more oversight to become a hot issue in the next weeks. >> senator bob menend

senator chuck hagel. his confirmation hearings for defense secretary were not a breeze. the vote on his nomination has not yet happened. republicans in the senate are now hinting that they might even filibuster chuck hagel's nomination for defense, which of course sounds normal, because, you know, it seems like republicans filibuster anything now. but in fact that would not be normal that would be unprecedented if they do it. the reason republicans are even considering doing this unprecedented thing is because they cannot block chuck hagel's nomination by normal means. even though the republicans have persuaded lots of the senators on their own side to oppose his nomination, they are a minority. and they have not persuaded any democrats to oppose him at all, at least none that have come out so far and said they'll vote no. now, there was that strange effort which seems to have been a right-wing effort to make it look like there was a democratic and left-wing opposition to chuck hagel. but honestly, it was ridiculous. and we had to pull out the bullpucky siren. it was this really ham-han

possible. >> it is unclear yet. senator hagel didn't do a very good job before the armed services committee, i think the opposition to him has intensified, whether it means he will achieve 60 votes or 51 is not clear. >> meaning they will filibuster, the republicans call themselves conservatives. but that word, i don't think it means what you think it means, overthrowing decades of unprecedented issues, it is certain, noises for filibustering, that is a leap, if they filibuster chuck hagel, they will not succeed. we know it because of math. there are 55 senators in the democracy caucus, they support chuck hagel, you need 60 to override a filibuster, so if you carry the one, the democrats only need one on their side to support a filibuster, there are two on record supporting chuck hagel for defense secretary, and we've seen reports for another six republican senators who have said that even though they may, oppose hagel, they wouldn't support a filibuster, there are two that seem unlikely to filibuster as well. that means a total of ten republican senators who wouldn't support the filibuster
